Color Coded

Are you addicted to Etsy? It's a website (www.etsy.com)designed for crafters to sell their yummy handmade goods and come together in a creative environment. Let me tell you, this site has everything! The talent is astounding, and the way the site is run is amazing. You can narrow your search to local designers only. You can see things that have been posted in the last minute - and there are a lot! But my favorite is the search-by-color option. That's right, you can search for products by your favorite colors.

As a pink girl, I loved pursuing the pink posts. This adorable pink elephant (shown above), designed by Banana Bug Babies, is a hair clip, and I adore it! What can I say, I'm just a big kid at heart!

So, do you Etsy? If so, I want to hear from you. Share your latest Etsy find here, no matter how you go about finding it. It will help me get to know you and your unique style, and I think we'll all have fun checking out the fresh finds. Just post a link to your Etsy discovery here, and share what it is you like about it.

Let the sharing begin!
Megan

This is another one of my Etsy faves. It's a felt hotdog magnet designed by ChrisCreatures. What?!? Seriously? Yes, it's true. He's a happy little hotdog that makes me smile.

Everything's Coming Up Roses!

Giddy up! I have our Flower Power Challenge winners! I must say that choosing these layouts from the many wonderful pages in the ol' creative garden was a toughie. It was like trying to choose a favorite flower from the oodles of goodies at the floral. Know what I'm sayin'? OK, on with the show...

Flower Power

Do you remember the old school Super Mario Brothers game? If you do, I bet that happy little tune is going through your head right now. Am I right? I always loved getting the flower power. Not only would my clothes and skin change colors, but I'd be able to get the bad guys with one push of my "B" button. Sweet!

Well, in honor of that power and the warmer spring weather, I'm launching a Flower Power Challenge! Make a layout with flowers on it and post it in our gallery. On Monday, I'll go through and randomly select two winners. What do you win? How about a flower stamp set from Making Memories! I've posted this layout by Katrinak to get your creative flowers growing. Isn't it cool?!

OK, let the fun begin. Check back on Monday to see who our winners are.

Cheers!
Megan

And finally, the winner of the Common Margin Challenge

MarieP, you are the final victor of today's NSD Day challenges. And let me tell you, it was so hard to not choose everyone. Why? Because you all refused to be spacist, and let those little bits of spacing breathe and grow. And I feel like a proud mother. Sigh.

And I do have a runner up as well. I love this layout so much, I wanted to marry it briefly, then thought better. But, it IS another lovely page!

So MarieP, email me at czielske@ckmedia.com so I can get your information, cool?

I like this Studio Blog so much, I think i'm going to have to come back, real soon.

Thanks again, everyone, for playing along!

The winner of the Self Portrait Challenge

Congrats to mlepitts for making the winning layout in the self portrait challenge. Good Lord, woman. This is WAY too cool. And I am officially in love with it!

But ladies, you all rocked this challenge. I KNOW it is hard for some of you to do these sorts of pages, so in a way, it's like you're ALL winners. Except without the prize packs.

I joke, because I love.

Although I do have one honorable mention, because I just thought she was a super cool lady.

Lookin' dang good, scrappersmoot, if there was EVER any question.

So mlepitts, e-mail me at czielske@ckmedia.com to give me your essentials!

The Winner of the Color Challenge

This was very, very, very, very, very, very hard. So hard. Way too hard. Why? Because you all totally rocked that color combo WAY to well. And every single page was a rock star of color love. Okay, that makes NO sense, but trust me, the pages were good, my friends. Real good.

And in the end, when the smoke cleared, and I was forced to choose the lone winner to ride off into prize package sunset land, I found myself choosing this page:

Congrats to Stacey C! I just loved the subtle application of the color palette. It was very sweet and understated, yet completely gorgeous. Plus, it's just a really lovely page.

So email me at czielske@ckmedia.com so I can hook a sister up wiht a prize package!

The winner of the photo challenge is...

MO Scrapper

Maybe it was the oreos?

I just love the whole numbering photos combined with a list, and these shots feel like a nice little chunk of slice of life, everyday goodness! Go MO Scrapper, if that is your REAL name...

E-mail me at czielske@ckmedia.com so I can get your details for le prize package. Cheers!

The winner of the type challenge is...

It's scrap2day24! And this was a very hard challenge to choose, because everyone seemed to really embrace the single font challenge like typology zen masters. In fact, I have to give honorable mention shout outs in each category. And my honorable mention type shout out goes to PaulaSG for the following totally rad layout.

Great work all of you who participated! I like good type, and I cannot lie!

So scrap2day24, you need to email me at czielske@ckmedia.com so I can get your address to get your prize pack into your creative hands! Congrats!

Drum Roll Please . . . Happy National Scrapbooking Day, Y'all!
Well it is finally here, people. The illustrious National Scrapbooking Day, heretofore referred to as NSD.

First off, I have to thank everyone who posted to the gallery for the various challenges. Holy krakatoa, people. Seriously. I believe I need to be checking out the gallery more often. You guys are really quite good, you know that?

So check back throughout the morning, afternoon and evening to see who's taking top honors in each category, and thusly receiving a cool prize pack from Simple Scrapbooks magazine.

Now I'm off to gaze lovingly at your pages, and prepare for the NSD parade I'm staging on my block this afternoon.

The Common Margin Challenge

Spend a few days in my world and you will quickly learn one thing about me: I am into order. WAY into order.

Now, this doesn't mean I'm not fun. I mean, I can roll with things…on OCCASION. Really. I can.

But in my work as a graphic designer, I've learned a thing or two about how caring about order lends itself to creating designs that communicate well and are aesthetically pleasing. And what does this mean for you and for today's challenge?

First, here's the thing: I scrapbook in a very linear manner. I don't tilt things very often. I don't get too crazy and funky. I keep it, for lack of a better term, clean and simple. (Yes, that IS a book series plug!) Further, I would hate it if everyone scrapooked like me. How boring! Part of what's cool about this hobby is how many different ways it can be done. Just look at Donna Downey. She'll scrapbook on an old toilet seat if you let her. But I digress.

However, there is one design convention that can be incorporated into any style of scrapbooking and will instantly create more unity and purpose in your design. That convention is common margin spacing.

What are margins? Well, they are the spaces on the edges of any page of information. But margins also exist in and around visual objects within a space as well.

The layout above that just ran in our March/April issue features common margin spacing in and around all of the lower photos, and also, in the area where the title is (the kraft cardstock area). The equal bits of spacing just add to the overall cohesiveness of the photo spread area on the layout.

Even if you like to tilt, and distress and go all nutty, you can still try to include bits of common spacing in and around your layout.

And that, my friends, is your final challenge of the week. Create a layout that shows common margin spacing in and around photos and elements. And remember, you can eyeball the spacing. I promise, for as anal as I appear, I never use a ruler to measure margins. Okay, never is a pretty strong words. Let's say, almost never.

Be sure to post your page to the Simple gallery and include "Margin Challenge" in the post title. And come visit the blog tomorrow on National Scrapbooking Day to see the winners!

Until then, happy margins.

The Self-Portrait Challenge

I'm willing to gamble a few of you don't even want to read any further on this post, because the thought of taking a self-portrait ranks right up there with cleaning toilets and dental procedures. Am I right?

If there's one thing I feel extremely passionate about, it's the idea that we as scrapbookers need to work a heck of a lot harder to make sure and include ourselves in our scrapbooks. The kids are great! The pets? Love 'em! Your cute husband or wife? Fabulous! But where are you?

If you can easily show me several spots in your various albums where you actually appear, then I applaud you. If not, then today is the day we need to get down to business.

And just what do you need for this challenge? It's simple: a picture of you, taken by you.

Now, it doesn't need to be fancy. The old "take a picture of yourself in a mirror" will do just fine. Although, if your camera has a self-timer, go ahead and play around with it. And put some make up on if that makes you feel better. I know if I'm taking a self-portrait, there WILL be mascara present. End of story.

And once you take the picture, then make a page. I don't care what you write on it. The layout above is one from Simple in 2007 and I just sort of turned it into a personal inventory, a snapshot of me on that day. You can do the same if you like. List journaling is such an easy, non-stressful way to put meaty, real-life content into your writing.

Don't be shy. Taking a picture of yourself is not self-indulgent. Well, actually is IS self-indulgent, but in a GOOD way. Because people are going to want to see how cool great, great, great Grandma Cathy was, when she was in her prime, before that muffin top got so out of hand.

Don't forget to post your layouts to the Simple gallery. Include "Self Portrait Challenge" in the title of your post, and I will be choosing a winner on Saturday in honor of National Scrapbooking Day.
